Lab #10 - Research: Choosing Parts for PC

Objectives:

    1.  To become familiar with picking parts to build a computer system. Can the part be chosen at a cheaper cost then buying a prebuild system?

Procedure:

a. Go to a computer parts web site to select the parts needed to build a computer system that is similar to this Dell system: I5 Processor System and the money you can spend is $800. One site you can use is Amazon, which is one I use a good deal or any other one that you may be familiar with such as New Egg.

b. I want you to pick parts similar to the Dell Business System. You do not need to get exact parts so choose components that are the similar. Specifically choose Windows 11 Pro for the operating system and the Intel Core i5-14400 10-Core Processor CPU. Make sure you choose all that you need to make the system work correctly. The specifications listed shows network, sound and video as part of the motherboard.  Try to make the system less expensive than the cost of purchasing the pre-built system. Once you select all the part in a shopping cart, take an image of the shopping cart with a list of components, prices and total cost and submit this as your lab report.

c. There is no need to include a monitor but a keyboard and mouse are included with the system. Therefore, you will need to select the i5 CPU, motherboard that supports it with memory. A case is needed to fit the motherboard and power supply. Then add the hard drive and optical drive. Also include Windows 11 Pro operating system.  No need to get heat sink and fan for the CPU most of the time it comes with the CPU.

d. The question I will ask about what you selected:

1.What is the most expensive item that was chosen?

2. Did you have many motherboards to choose from?

3. Would it be worth it to double the RAM?

4. What form factor did you chose to build your system with?

5. Why did you choose that wattage for the Power supply?

6. Could you save money by choosing a smaller drive?

7. Is it worth adding an optical drive for your system?

8. Could you price the system less than $800?

 e. Take the shopping cart image and answers and put into a document to upload to Lab #10 assignment. The shopping cart image is worth 60 points and the questions are worth 5 points a piece for a total of  40 points. The lab is worth 100 points.
