Lab #9 - Research: Recovery Tools
Objectives:
1. To become familiar with different third party tools to help repair Windows systems.
Procedure: Windows has many built-in tools but there are many other tools available that may help with certain situations. Many times these programs are free. If you go to one of the two web sites I have below, these sites have created an IOS image that can be written onto a flash drive to make it a bootable device with its own operating system and programs. They have installed on the images a long list of free troubleshooting software. You can boot these flash drives and they run as a computer with internet access and a small amount of storage space. Running the system off the flash drive is helpful because then the computer does not boot off the internal hard drive and so the hard drive can be scanned for problems.
I have created a bootable flash drive with these images and use for hard to troubleshoot problems. I use a program Rufus to create these flash drives.
What I am going to have you do is evaluate four of the programs that are in these images. Three of my choosing and one you choose. I want you be the evaluator for a business and let me know if you think this program would be helpful for the business. Let me know how they work, and if you can install them and run them, (I know not everyone will be able to install) then evaluate them for the business.
1. The first piece of software is CCleaner. This program is similiar to Disk Cleanup of Microsofts. It will clean not only Windows files but other installed program too, like my Firefox.
2. The second piece of software is CPU-Z, now this software is for telling what type of hardware is in a system. This is helpful for determining if a piece of software will run on that system.
3. The third piece of software is Macrium Reflect. I use this program when I need to rebuild a person's PC and they do not have their product keys anymore.
4. Pick a one of your own from the lists to analyze for the fourth one.
5. Write a paragraph analysis of each of these, put into a single document and upload it to Lab #9 assignment. Each evaluation is worth 20 points for a total of 80pts. for the lab submission.
