Lab 9 ITN 103

Step 1  Booting Up Linux

You have a couple of choices on how you want to do these next three Linux labs. You can use the Linux you used with VirtualBox or you can use the Cyber Range to access a version I loaded. Now not all version of Linux are the same so you may run into a version that will not have the command we will be working with so you may  need to use a different version. What version of Linux are you running? Was it just the terminal view or does it have a GUI?

Step 2  Exploring the Terminal

Once you have your version of Linux running you need to find the Terminal, which is similar to Windows command prompt.  All Linux commands are case sensitive so you need to be carful of that.

Try each of these commands in the terminal, for more help search the web for uses:

cat is one of my favorite commands. Were you able to get these command to work?

Step 3 Files with Hardware Information

Change to the /proc directory.

·         What CPU(s) is the system running on?

·         How much RAM does it currently use?

·         How much swap space do you have?

·         What drivers are loaded?

·         How many hours has the system been running?

Step 4 Installing Putty (these next two parts can be done in Windows)

You will need to install the program Putty to use the SSH client to access a Linux server to practice commands.

Step 5 Bandit

There is is web site is a nice web site to practice using Linux commands. Use the web to help you with some of the command need to get to a new level.

Go to the Bandit web site and get at least to level 3. What level did you get too? What were the challenges with using this site?  What is the password for Level 3?
