Lab 8 ITN 103
Step 1
Virtualization
For this lab you will need to use your own computer to complete, if your able to do it
ther ar other options to try. I will explain later. Let me know if you have problems. I have used
VirtualBox many times to run images
that are free on the internet. VirtualBox can run in Windows, Apple and Linux so
many should be able to use it. Sometimes if you cannot get VirtualBox to run
there is a setting in the computer's BIOS, that has to be set, to enable to run
a virtual operating system, some of you may have this problem.
.
Step 2
Downloading an VirtualBox image.
There is a web site that has many VirtualBox
images to use. OSBoxes
is the site but there are many to choose from.
I
have worked with Mint, Ubuntu, Kali, Fedora, Debian (many use this as the base
like Ubuntu) and CentOS. I see a version of Android that would be interesting.
These images are VDI files and they are hard drive images so adding them to
VirtualBox is different. This link may help,
VDI
setup. Now I have had some students having problems with
VirtualBox so you can try
VMware Workstation which was also free but they recnetly have been bought. OSBoxes also has VMware images too. I
tried the Kali
site recently and they have images too, with instructions in
how to add.
Step 3
Running the Image in VirtualBox
Run the version you choose, most Linux images should have a desktop. The Linux
version you choose can be used later in the class when we start exploring Linux.
We will mostly use the command line or the terminal. Comment on what happens and show me
an image of your Virtual system with the host present in the image.
If you can't run VirtualBox or VM ware, you can try Hyper-V for Windows 10 or 11
or installing Windows Sandbox.
